The css modification did not seem to help. If I can get this to work properly soon, I would go ahead and purchase the Pro version, so I could modify the text formats.

I probably won’t be able to help you with this problem. But I just resolved this problem on my own website after months of intermittently looking for answers around the web. I wanted to post what worked for me somewhere relevant in case it makes a difference for someone later down the line.
I installed WP Mail SMTP too, and in the settings where you can configure SMTP, the log after a test send was very helpful in understanding what was going on.
In my case, the SMTP connection was being established with my spam filtering software (CleanMail). We have a ‘delay’ filter enabled in this software which is supposed to discourage spammers. So during connection, there is a 20 second additional wait time before the connection is fully established and the request to send the form is fully completed.
I configured an address that did not activate the delay filter and sent the Contact Form 7 mail to that address. Everything worked without any hesitation after that.
