Forgot to mark as resolved so this is just a resolution reply 🙂
I have no idea what happened but they are back – either the latest WP update or a cache clear finally got things working right again – at any rate I seem to be in business again.
I have Kadence Blocks Pro- when i mentioned activating/deactivating it was in the Pro Blocks settings. I also made sure on the post itself that they were enabled if that is where the block manager for Gutenberg itself is found. If that block manager is elsewhere, I could use some help finding it.

Resolved this myself by deleting the default avatar in the plug in options. Now it has reverted to WordPress’s own default and I’m no longer getting path errors.
