In reply to: Question on Simple:Press versus BBPressbbPress is the Corky Thatcher of WP forums. It’s developmentally challenged, so to speak, and you can tell just by looking at it. Actually trying to use confirms it. They’re slow about incremental fixes and updates. I don’t think any of the developers are too concerned with it.
Testing my site with bbPress, it is much slower than running it with Simple Press. Benchmark tests show it’s not just perception.
There is a bbPress plugin for attachments. And some for bbcode, richtext, and other features a normal forum has. But these will slow down your site even more.
Simple Press was good until they switched their support model. Now you can’t even look at the documentation without paying for it. I could understand making the support forum members-only… Nevermind that they implemented this a couple weeks after I made a donation to them. No documentation? Forget it.Mingle is supposed to be pretty good. I haven’t tried it out yet, but those who use it seem quite happy with it. It’s only one guy maintaining it (Simple Press is only two guys), but he seems to enjoy it and is fairly responsive, even as he’s working on building the next version from scratch.

In reply to: Mingle Forum Plugin download link not foundThere are more than a few of us would-be new Mingle users looking for this.

In reply to: Importing Mingle Forum content to Simple:PressNo need to leave Mingle. The developer is continuing to support it (albeit at a slower pace), while developing a complete rewrite for v 2.

In reply to: Simple press Forum !!!If you haven’t switched, then you don’t have it so bad. I donated money to Simple-Press, only to find out a week or two later that the support forum AND the documentation was no longer available to me. I need the documentation for some things, but I work on this in my spare time, and on a shoestring budget. I don’t know that I’d get my issues worked out before the 2 months expired, and I already spent $30 with them for nothing.

Need to replace is_site_admin with is_super_admin in the bp-links-admin.php and bp-links-classes.php files.
Lost all thumbnails I didn’t manually upload, though. Frickin brilliant.

In reply to: MIngle and simple press / forum integration please readBoth together? That sounds like a mess. You need to see about importing your Mingle threads into Simple:Press. Lots of work.
If you want a social network site, with forums dedicated to users, you’re better off using BuddyPress with the Buddypress forums. Rather than the category/forum organization most forums use, it organizes by groups. I think it’s kind of weird, but it sounds like it might be a good fit for you.

In reply to: How to turn WordPress Blog into Reddit or DiggOoh, very nice.
I’ll reach out to this guy. Thank you.Forum: Fixing WordPress
In reply to: How to turn WordPress Blog into Reddit or DiggI’m not sure that BuddyPress Links or TDO Mini Forms will give me much more than simply allowing new users to register as contributors. I’m still new to this WordPress system.
I’m not too worried about people subscribing to Vote activity. I just want people to be able to submit a link, provide some info, and have those links make it to the main page if it gets enough votes.
Wanna split the cost of hiring a developer with me? 😀

In reply to: How to turn WordPress Blog into Reddit or DiggI am leaving Pligg for WordPress. WordPress gets me a lot closer to what I want my site to do than Pligg does without a lot of coding. I need to spend time on content, not learning how to hack my CMS.
Anyway, a lot of people mention using a combination of TDO Mini Forms (I think Gravity Forms may also work) and Vote It Up.
I’m trying to do this right now (and complicating it with IntenseDebate, which overrides WordPress accounts – argh). I’m not sure how elegant it will work. Pligg does the user-submitted links thing pretty well (it’s all the other stuff it lacks that poses a problem for me). It would be nice if someone could come up with a single plugin designed for this explicit purpose. If you search on here or elsewhere, you’ll see there are quite a few people who want this Pligg-type functionality in their WordPress.
