Are the generic avatars located as you’d like to ?
If so, modify the existing User Photo plugin, the user-photo.php file, around line 155, replace #class=”photo# by #class=”avatar photo#

In Settings > User Photo, check the box for the option “Override Avatar with User Photo” which requires that the ‘Avatar Display’ setting under Discussion be set to “Show”.
