Hey there! I never managed to fix this so I found this plugin instead:

It works really well with bbpress and has tons of features event though it’s not being updated anymore.
You may want to give it a try !

I was wondering if you could actually implement the suggestion made by maneshtimilsina, and create an option for uploading three different headers so that the header looks good on responsive devices too.
