I’m running
php 5.3.3 on rhel 6.7
libSSH Version => libssh2/1.4.2
libssh2 version => 1.2.2
banner => SSH-2.0-libssh2_1.2.2
I’m seeing the same thing as well. I use ssh2 credentials.
It seems to bail out when trying to remove the old version of the plugin:

Unpacking the update…
Installing the latest version…
Removing the old version of the plugin…
Plugin update failed.
… then the actual error message much like dm652 quoted.
