At the moment, this plugin does not have the capability of having albums within galleries.
All galleries are listed on Gallery page (here you can see the featured images you’ve selected for each gallery). All pictures within a gallery are listed on Gallery single page.

Would you mind providing an example? At the moment, every image has a caption (which can be be seen on hover as anchor title, or after click, at the bottom of the thickbox window).

In order to set a featured image for a gallery, you must select a featured image for the post which contains your gallery.
By example:
In WordPress Admin area, go to Gallery, add a gallery, enter a title, upload some photos using WordPress Media Uploader, then select a featured image (from bottom right corner of the page), then publish the post.
You shall see that on frontend, Gallery page, the thumbnail for this gallery will be the one chosen as featured.
