I found the problem. It turns out there was a plugin installed called “Ultimate Member”. Under /login/ was actually a regular WordPress page that embedded a login form through Ultimate Member.

I have deleted that page and now everything works as expected.

By the way, I cannot confirm that WPS Hide Login was failing login attempts through the login form. It is hiding the default login form under /wp-login.php and makes it look as if that page does not exist (showing a 404 error). Logins through the form at /login/ were still possible.
