You might want to try this. This worked for me when i had similar issue
Uncomment the // @ini_set(‘memory_limit’, ‘128M’); line to
@ini_set(‘memory_limit’, ‘128M’); in /plugins/nextgen-gallery/lib/gd.thumbnail.inc.php file
