I came on here looking for a similar answer.

I would guess that the regenerated image is placed in media library as a larger ‘copy’ of the thumbnail, which is also still there.

Or, is the thumbnail automatically deleted in favour of the new, regenerated image? This seems unlikely but I wanted to check before I use it.
