Thanks for the ideas and response. It seems that even without the og:description field Facebook and Google+ are pulling correctly from the meta description on the site.

Thanks for this plugin, it’s really awesome.
I looked everywhere for an answer to this question, but couldn’t find anything.
What can I do about the og:description for each post if I don’t manually enter an excerpt? Is there a way to populate that from the auto excerpt that WordPress uses elsewhere? I tried the %POST_EXCERPT% tag but it doesn’t contain anything.
