No, it’s a semi-managed server so I do most of the admin work. I can ask, but I was hoping it would be a commonly-known thing that everybody here would just know 🙂
I’m sure that 0664 would work, since that gives everyone WRITE permission except for public. But how would I set it so that, either upon installing WP or upon setting up Permalinks, the permission would change?
Based on the responses, I’m guessing that’s not as simple of a question to answer as I’d hoped :-/
I did read it, it says to keep changing the permissions until you find something that sticks. But since the “Permalinks” section doesn’t show the warning message, there’s no way for me to know what permission setting would have worked.
Further, it doesn’t say how one might change the settings so that the .htaccess for new accounts would retain that permission setting. It’s going to be a pain to remember to change the .htaccess for every new account that I create.
