Since this is new, and really makes the free plugin very much more cumbersome to use, it looks to me like a deliberate attempt to push people into using the paid version. It might also push people into looking at alternatives.
Could you give more detailed instructions on how to configure gmail for this problem?
a step by step guide would really be appreciated.

Finally set you settings to:
Connection: Sockets
Mail Protocol: POP3-SSL or IMAP-SSL
Port: 995 or 993
Mail Server: pop.gmail.com or imap.gmail.com
Userid: your full email address
Password: your password
I still had to go and delete the config the file in tmp before the update would work. This seems to be a permanent necessity when updating.
