In reply to: Is the persistent object cache warning necessary? Thanks Gabor Lippert.
I understand what is required, just wish I had the understanding of how to implement it. I could probably re-learn how to use FTP & find the file & work out how to edit it – but my fear of getting it wrong & stuffing something up is enough to make me feel it’s too big a risk.
I’m sure for folk used to pages of code it’s a very simple copying & pasting task & the info for them will be very handy.

In reply to: Is the persistent object cache warning necessary?I updated to WordPress 6.1 a few days ago & have started to get the ‘persistent object cache’ message in site health. I followed the advice & contacted my web site host who told me they dont have memcache or Redis on their servers. They suggested I enable ‘opcache’ from the cPanel if it wasn’t already enabled. I found it was enabled already.
Now this stuff is above my level of understanding, but it seems that I have done what I can.
Is there anything else I can do to get rid of the ‘health nag’ ?
I’m not smart enough to start accessing files to add or change lines of code & expect there are probably many many WordPress users like me in that boat.
I have spent a considerable time (wasted) trying to deal with this as a direct result of the site health message, & feel a little cheesed off as a result.
Messages put into site health should address all users at all levels.
If it had said “This message is a result of new checks being done by WP6.1” it would have been helpful.
If it had added “If your webhost cant supply this don’t worry about it if everything is working as usual” it would have saved a *lot* of time and frustration.
Now, is there an easy simple way to just turn the nag off, or do all us on servers without memcache or Redis just have to put up with it?

In reply to: Have a default theme availableMate, you have been very helpful – much appreciated. Think I’m sorted for now.
All the best,

In reply to: Have a default theme availableThanks again, So
- do I need to have one of the Twenties installed
but not activated, for it to be *my* default ( for wordpress to reset to if the need arises)? I realise that this is very basic, but I have read in lots of places the reason to have a default theme, but never what one needs to do to get one. Is it as simple as just having it installed but not used?

In reply to: Have a default theme availableHi again James,
I went to try as you suggested, but found that as well as Karuna which is in use (activated) that despite the warning about Twenty Twenty Two, that I, during a previous attempt to rid myself of the warning, had deleted Twenty Twenty Two, & had installed Twenty Seventeen instead (not activated). So why Twenty Twenty Two got a mention in that warning (& not Twenty Seventeen) I don’t know.So I decided to delete Twenty Seventeen & the warning changed to just
“`Themes add your site’s look and feel. It’s important to keep them up to date, to stay consistent with your brand and keep your site secure.
Your site has 1 installed theme, and it is up to date.
Your site does not have any default theme. Default themes are used by WordPress automatically if anything is wrong with your normal theme.`”
Which appeared I was back to square one. So I then tried what you suggested, I installed Twenty Twenty Two.
I don’t understand why that should have made any difference, but it did! The warning has now gone completely. Did you mean ‘re-install’ as opposed to ‘install’. If so I’m guessing that there had been a problem with the initial installation of Twenty Twenty-Two which somehow caused both the warning & the glitch which said Twenty Twenty-Two when it had been replaced with Twenty Seventeen??
So a follow up question now the warning has gone if I may?
If I have Twenty Twenty-Two installed. A) is it now my ‘default’ theme, & B) if there is any problem with my active theme & wordpress substitute my default theme, can I then just re-install my currently active theme (Karuna), activate it & still have it’s current settings preserved ……… or is it a matter of content being preserved but all the customisations needing to to be re-made? If the latter – is there a simple means of recording what they are currently whilst everything is how I want it?
Dion – thanks – but at the risk of making you cringe I have to admit that editing a file like that is well out of my comfort zone. I’m definitely a ‘drag & drop’ website constructor & even getting in to the files on my website via FTP (?) would be a challenge.
Thanks again to you both.

In reply to: Have a default theme availableHi James, I’m not sure I haven’t tried. Worried about losing all my appearance modifications/settings if I uninstall Karuna. However this has been an issue for a year or two. The warning is not always there, although it is fairly common that it pops up. I have read of the same thing occurring for others at various times but as yet have never read a solution when others have asked the same question. These have been with different themes installed, not specifically those that I have. If I remove TwentyTwenty two (or whatever others I’ve tried at different times) the recommendation to remove the inactive theme goes away, but the “Your site does not have any default theme” warning remains.

In reply to: Navigating past posts – different on laptop & IpadJoy ………. I could kiss you. You identified the problem & a simple mouse click has fixed the link problem. As you surmised someone (me) had changed a permalink setting (not really knowing what I was doing) & forgot I had done so. Luckily it was a fairly recent change & your post prompted me to go look at ‘Permalinks’ under settings. As soon as I looked I recalled making the change & knew what I had changed it from. Changed it back & all was good. It must be painful dealing with folk who only have limited knowledge like myself, but I thank you for doing so from the bottom of my heart.
In regard to updating my theme.
All the changes I have made to the theme have been done via ‘Appearance’ in Dashboard. Changes via the Appearance sub headings of ‘Customise’, ‘Widgets’ ‘Header’ & ‘Menus’.No changes under the Appearance sub headings of ‘Themes’, ‘Edit CSS’ or ‘Theme Editor’
Does this mean I can update the theme from 1.4 to 2.1 via the dashboard without concern?
Thank you so much again!

In reply to: Navigating past posts – different on laptop & IpadHi Joy, thank you for the assistance you have offered.
I tried the health check plugin with all plugins disabled and got the same result with the links going to the same incorrect posts, suggesting I guess that a plugin is not responsible.
I have now updated to WordPress 5.1.1 – again has made no difference.
I don’t understand your comment about naming my posts with numbers. All my posts have descriptive names as per the list of links which is not working. If you have somehow seen those posts ‘named’ with numbers I know nothing about it.
I haven’t tried downgrading to 4.9.10 as it seems nothing was different between 4.9.8 and 5.1.1 as far as the link problem goes which suggests to me it is probably not related to the wordpress version??
Could it have anything to do with the Twenty Seventeen Theme version I am using? It is an older version which I haven’t updated because of warnings about losing any customisation I have made. To be honest I can’t recall what I have customised as far as the theme goes and it worries me what I might lose if I update it. Dashboard tells me I have Twenty Seventeen version 1.4 and invites me to update to 2.1.
‘Manually’ creating a child theme/changing style sheets (whatever they are) etc etc is beyond my level of comfort and understanding. If I were to create a ‘child theme’ using a plugin like ‘Child Theme Wizard’ plugin (because it looks the simplest to use) using my existing Twenty Seventeen 1.4 Theme as the ‘parent theme’ and then subsequently updated 1.4 to 2.1 via Dashboard, would this retain any customisations I may have previously made to the theme?
Thanks again,

In reply to: Navigating past posts – different on laptop & IpadI have now tried installing multiple different category and archive plugins which allow me to use a shortcode on a page (called Previous Posts a sub menu under ‘Posts’ in the main menu). I successfully generated a list of all posts by date and title this way. It looked just what I wanted.
BUT there remains a problem, and it has existed with every different plugin I have tried which leads me to believe that the problem must be on my site or with my web host and not with the plugins.
The problem is that dated posts in the list open posts from either the wrong year. eg if I click on a listed post 26th August 2017, it opens a post from 27th August 2018, or just the wrong date eg If I click on a post from July 12th 2018 it opens a different post from 31st July 2018.
These results have been consistent with all the different plugins I tried.
I tried listing just by category, but got the same results. All plugins have said that they are compatible with my version of WordPress (4.9.8), so all I can think of is that it must be something wrong at my end, but have no idea where to look. The dates on individual posts seem correct. I am so fed up and frustrated after spending hours on this.
If anyone can assist me in resolving this issue I will be most grateful.
Thank You
IanIf it makes any difference my host (GoDaddy) runs MySQL 5.5. and PHP 5.6.

In reply to: Navigating past posts – different on laptop & IpadHi Joy, thank you for your reply. It is good to know there is a solution.
However I am completely ignorant about the use of Tags. I wonder if you or someone else might tell me how to go about using the ‘more tag’ in a step by step way.
If there is a plugin to achieve this which avoids me having to edit wordpress files it would be far preferable. Even with this assistance would be welcome, at least as far as understanding the concept of what a tag is & how to add it. Thank you

In reply to: ‘Incremental updates’ to live site from localhost?Hi Konstantinos,
Thanks for your reply. You have hit the nail on the head with the problem of having an ever increasing amount of data to transfer as the site grows, particularly as I will be adding plenty of images over time. This was how a previous blog worked with Apple’s iWeb, & it was so cumbersome as well as eventually unsustainable.I will have a max of just 9Gb per month for all our internet usage.
Unless anyone else knows different, it seems that my expectation of creating a site where I could then simply add pre-formatted posts including images was mistaken. I have already discovered the need to edit links to each image uploaded from the localsite, hence my hope for some software/plugin which would do all that sort of stuff.
Others on a couple of travel forums I frequent have talked about doing as you suggest with a text editor but uploading to their wordpress.com sites, something I had been keen to avoid as it is quite possible that whilst away from cellular internet access it is likely I will compose multiple posts each with a number of photos & want to upload them all when reaching somewhere with a phone signal. It is not hard to imagine having to devote a full day to this on each occasion, when I had hoped to compose AND format ‘little & often’ & just click ’send’ when returning to ‘civilisation’. I don’t know if you (or anyone) can advise whether it would be simpler for me to do as you suggest using wordpress.com or much the same (other than being hosted on a domain that is not mine).
regards
CuppaEDIT. Just saw your edit after I posted. Thanks, will give it a look.Fingers crossed.
