Looks like the issue is fixed. Unfortunately, the delay was not acceptable for some of my clients and I have switched to another plugin for those.
I got an email that they’ll work on it. In the meantime, I have switched to another plugin, maybe temporarily, maybe for good.
Any follow up on this would be appreciated – as it stands, the plugin is all but useless.
The update fixed the “&” issue, but not the upload issue. Users can still not upload, getting a “File type not allowed” error, on all files. This is not a settings issue, as all file types are allowed and an admin can upload files.
I see – I may do that as well, because as it turns out, users can no longer upload files either. As admin, I can…
I was about to respond “I got this problem too”, but I see that your “&” directory is browsable.
In short: we can create a directory with an “&” in it, but then cannot access it, getting a pop-up windows stating:
“Unable to open “RoDs & Minutes”.
Folder not found.”Not sure since when this is a problem, as these type of chars are not used very often. To be clear, in this case “RoDs and Minutes” works fine…
Done and I will. Happy Holidays 😎
Okay Suman, I’ll purchase the Pro version through Freemium then – this is automatically recurring and if they don’t take too much “commission” I’m fine with it.

Hi Jola,
Thanks, that would (probably) explain where te problem lies.
They were not my first choice either (I always use Antagonist and they actually came up with the Post SMTP plugin to circumvent mail problems from the site), but it’s what this company picked.
I will contact MijnDomein, but I doubt they will be helpful.
To Tim: sorry for the SMTP confusion. I tried M365 as fall back, which is an option in the plugin and they have a M365 E3 account, but that didn’t work either.
In the meantime, I’m using Antagonist as service now – that works.
Thanks both!
Robert
Hi Tim,
kay, I found that option – the only thing that would indicate an error is probably:
✅ 🔒 Port 587 can be used for SMTP to mail.mijndomein.nl. Warning: connected to oxcs.net instead of mijndomein.nl
I have no idea if that was a warning that was there all along, as I have never done that test.
If that is the problem, I wouldn’t know where to look…
Maybe Jola70 can share his test data and see if there’s something to be made from this problem?
Thanks for your help and I didn’t realize you were not even the developer.
Robert
It all worked for months. I take it that Post SMTP didn’t update yesterday or Wednesday, but could it be another plugin update caused this?
I wouldn’t know which one, but I can do a trial and error with the ones that were updated. Doesn’t make sense if it’s a Post SMTP problem…
I don’t know how to do a connectivity test – I can send a test nail, bur that results in the same ‘5.5.1 Invalid command’ error.
I tried fail back, but I ran into Microsoft SMTP problems. Can’t see right now, but the authentication was fine, but relay was refused , or something like that.
Yeah, sorry – it’s https://membersite.mcce-mil.org.
SMTP was and is fine – we’re using mijndomein.nl for this site.
Unfortunately, it is not really necessary. In the meantime, I have found that the other plugin only creates user directories that way, since no characters like that can be in a directory name.
However, for your plugin, I do not see this need and it can be ‘fixed’ by putting a piece of code in your (child) theme’s function.php – you even list that on your own site, although the other developer had to point me to it (https://www.cozmoslabs.com/docs/profile-builder-2/developers-knowledge-base/login-logout-register/change-username-format-loggin-email/)
Anyway, I have worked around it as prescribed and maybe you will consider making this permanent.
Thanks!

To answer my own question (this usually happens after you post it):
I think a File Manager plugin is the culprit here. As that creates user folders for up- and downloads, the username would not be allowed to have those symbols.
I already had the option to create user folders switched off, but I it looks like the usernames are still converted if they are in fact the same as the email address.
I have also posted a question on the support page of that plugin’s creator…
