In reply to: anti-spam plug-in recommendations?Neil,
Social spam stinks. On the up side, if the spam has markedly increased, then it sounds like your client’s site is growing. On the down side, if comment spam is hurting your client’s business, then free plug-ins may not be enough to effectively stop the pain.
Beyond cost, as you evaluate solutions consider whether the options include URL link and context analysis and fingerprinting. These two features are tactical approaches that can prove effective. (My company’s blog wrote a bit about these two approaches at http://www.impermium.com/blog/2012/02/03/answers-to-developer-questions-on-fighting-social-spam/).

In reply to: Thousands of Spam Comments every week – how can I stop this?As your business grows (yay!), the bad traffic may increase (boo!). There are a range of free options for cleaning spam that have been around for awhile, but it sounds like you are a medium-sized business and the bad guys are flooding you with a large amount of malicious traffic. In this case, you may consider a higher performance paid service that provides advanced spam filtering (like large companies use) and profanity filtering together. If not, the number of miscategorized comments becomes more troublesome as your site’s comment volume grows, and you might not be able to keep up.
