After clearing the cache a few rounds and waiting longer, the editor finally loaded. Hope it will stay open without issue.
Thanks @skyzlmt for sharing your recent experience! I feel better for not checking the setting earlier. 😆 It simply unchecked itself one day. Weird & annoying. I had to re-upload the images so they file nicely and keep the root folder clean.
I found an online EXIF viewer. Works great – https://onlineexifviewer.com/
As you have suspected, those problem files all have “UserComment: SflyProxyVersion 1;”! The images were created some time ago so I can’t track back what may have caused such a data field but I am glad to discover this is not a WordPress issue. I am also glad to learn about checking EXIF of images.
Useful tips all along, James! Thank you again for your amazing help. Happy that there is a community for us WP users to ask all these technical questions. Have a wonderful day!

I use Photoshop to create those images and don’t know how to edit/add data to the images before uploading. In fact, that’s the key reason why I installed the “Auto Image Attributes From Filename With Bulk Updater” plugin because I want to include those attributes into the images based on the filenames.
Anyway, I have not used my phone to access WP before but why not! Learning something new every day 🙂 I just tested uploading images directly from my phone. The attributes were copied correctly. No “SflyProxyVersion” in the fields.
Then, I was inspired to test uploading a few more files from my laptop. To my surprise, some files from my batch uploaded with attributes copied correctly also! I tried 5 new files and 4 got through fine. Only 1 of them got the “SflyProxyVersion”. I don’t recall creating the files differently so now I am puzzled why a group of files got this weird behavior but another group is ok. The filenames themselves do not give me a clue. I can’t see the image data. Where can I get a simple EXIF viewer to inspect if there is any difference between the “successful files” and the rest?
Though this is frustrating, I also find this quite interesting and educational. Again, appreciate your help!

I checked twice in troubleshooting mode with all plugins deactivated & theme set to basic. (So very handy!) Uploaded files still got the file title & caption as “SflyProxyVersion 1;” That means it’s not from plugins… so it came from Bluehost server? I can ask them but their support is useless. Every time I called them they had no idea what I was talking about. It’s such a peculiar name but Google search doesn’t turn up with anything.
OMG! Success!!!! That is the setting! Not sure how it got unchecked. I didn’t even know about it and now I know. This is a huge relief. THANK YOU SO MUCH James for your persistent help!
Now, one issue left – why the title/alt text/caption are all “SflyProxyVersion 1;”. I am wondering if it has to do with uploading too many image files. Is there a limit in quantity of images to process in the uploader? I am building an album and there are 500+ images uploaded but they total less than 70MB. I am starting to think if I should explore external album to embed on my page. Your thought?
Anyway, fixing the sub-folder is a bigger deal since it worried me the system is not working properly.
I have to also thank you for introducing me the Health Check so I learned a few good tips off the bat about the importance of deleting unused plugins & themes. I did a round of clean up and feel happy about it. Thank you again! 🙂

Yes, I did that twice. All deactivated and theme to basic. No change.
Then I tried out uploading with plugins activated. No change.
Very odd indeed! I did that again in Troubleshooting Mode as well as uploading via Modula (photo album plugin) instead of media uploader. All new images went to the “uploads” folder, not the subfolder, and the title/alt text/caption are all “SflyProxyVersion 1;”! What is this “SflyProxy”???
Is there a limit for the no. of images for media uploads? The file size is small but there are a number of them. Yet, this started happening days before I uploaded more images. So, it was not the cause. I am at a loss here. Anyone has encountered this?
Will sleep on it…
BTW, this is where I read about the file permission issue – https://www.google.com/search?q=wordpress+media+upliad+not+adding+to+subfolders&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-us&client=safari
I did check the permission setting. It’s 755 at folder & file level. Seems ok? I don’t want to change it without understanding.
Though WordPress was updated to v6.6.1 on 7/23/24, the wp-config.php file didn’t change. It’s dated 1/10/24. I downloaded the file anyway and searched for keyword “uploads”, finding none.
This prompted me to check my other WP website that was also updated at the same time. The uploads work normally. If the config was changed at version update, it will likely change there too.
Frustrating. What else to check? 🙁
I uninstalled all plugins and changed theme to basic but the problems persist. 🙁 Just installed Health Check and learning to use it.
Any other suggestion? Still puzzling me how it suddenly is not working.

Thanks James for your quick reply. My website has not been launched yet. However, will this affect my website setup? I am still learning to build it and am afraid any changes will not be reversible… I guess my biggest question is why it suddenly shows conflict when things have been working normally? And you don’t think it’s related to file permission. I am glad I don’t have to change that…
