ok i figured it out with help from SJ.
in the channel you have to use the add administrator option, which is hidden in the settings button(gear icon). so you have to click at the top of the channel to bring up the main channel menu, then the gear icon, then add administrator. If you try to add the bot as a regular subscriber it will fail.
