I’ve tested again and I’m getting the same lower score with the plugin activated. The plugin looks great and I see there is only one extra request, that said, I trust Pingdom is seeing something I am not.

Your solution worked a treat! 🙂
I fixed my issue by deselecting “Remove write permissions from .htaccess and wp-config.php” under the “Tweeks” tab in Better WP Security plugin setting options.
Hope this helps someone.
