I’m finding it hard to see where the problem would be – my best guess is that another plugin is interferring with the ordering of these.
Can you try a shortcode from the demo on a random page and see if you are getting the correct results? (This will just ensure that there is not a typo in the above):

The free version only looks at post date – with the pro you can use dates from custom fields (as long as the date is saved in the database as YYYYYMMDD) but you only have one display option which is a jQuery date picker – check the demos to see if this is suitable for you.

The plugin does not specify to only work on pages & posts – I think it should work with custom post types – I’ll double check and let you know.

The pro version allows you to affect the order of the search results.
