The Blog and Blog Post templates in Pagelines have a feature called the Content Sidebar. Contrary to its name, it stretches across the page horizontally. Maybe you could use that along with a plugin like this:

…to display the most recent post in each category. You could put a text widget in the Content Sidebar and type in the shortcodes generated by the plugin.
