Thanks for your reply. The issue was general poor performance loading images. It turned out to be due to some changes on the server side by the host. A few purges of the cache and forced refreshes resolved the issues. W_Optimize is working fine.
Please consider this matter resolved.

1) Deleted the /plugins/wp-super-cache folder ( and contents )
2) Reinstalled wp-super-cache
3) From within the plugin settings purged/deleted the cache and disabled caching
4) Deactivated the wp-super-cache plugin
5) deleted wp-super-cache pluginwp-super-cache is now completely removed and my site is running a lot faster!. I’ll wait a version or two to try wp-super-cache again.

I have yet to find a solution and still waiting to hear from the developer. WP Super Cache was the only plugin that “disappeared” post the upgrade.
