  • Ahh – so you are on WordPress.com – this is good. Your post didn’t show up until after I posted mine.

I hope you are able to resolve the custom pages.

    Take care.

    Hello Ruben,

Here is the link to the $30 package you mentioned. I have not used it – because I have a web development background so I have managed to do my own customizations.

I understand your frustration. Learning WordPress is a learning curve, but in my experience, it is MUCH more user friendly and powerful than any other CMS/blogging tool available, so it is definitely worth the effort. Once you become more familiar with it you will see why others love it so much.

For those who don’t have a lot of experience in web dev, or specifically with WordPress — WordPress.com (as mentioned above) is a good place to start. You can get paid services to help you along, whereas doing ww.wp.xz.cn (self-hosted) you are kind of on your own with the help of these forums and google.

One piece of advice I can give to a beginner, is when you choose a theme – try to select the one that has the functionality and layout closest to what you are seeking rather than fonts/colors and imagery. Colors and fonts are much easier to change than overall design and functionality.

I hope this is helpful. Good luck to you.

I’d suggest trying the Meteor Slide plugin. Make the slides any size you want in the settings, and decide how many seconds before the slides change. It’s a simple plugin to use and I find it loads quickly.

Every slide has the option to show hover text and to be a hyperlink.

You can put your shortcode for the slideshow into a div if you need it to be in that particular space (such as in your mock-up). Just ensure your photos (slides) are sized correctly when you upload them to WordPress.

    I hope this helps.

I use them in http://www.deniselennon.ca if you want to see how they look or need help.

    Hello Rueben,

I would suggest making a Custom Page Template for the pages you do not want a header.

This keeps it nice and clean without damaging the layout of other pages in the site.

I hope this link will help explain how to create the template you need. WordPress is great for keeping a consistency though your site, and custom templates work very well for those pages that need to stray from the general theme.

    Good luck!

    Hello Harry,

I agree with Steve – if you have different slideshow plugins activated, try de-activating or deleting the ones you aren’t using because they can mess one-another up.

I haven’t used the flickr slideshows, but I’ve had great luck with the Meteor Slides plugin. I find it loads quickly, is simple to use and looks good. However, if you have your photos already uploaded to flickr and don’t want to have to upload them into WP, I say keep truckin with the flickr gallery and see if you can get it running.

    Take care!

No problem, glad to help! Most of the time this works. If you use themes and you come across one that uses a different template for the homepage – sometimes this solution will not work. I’ve had to go into the files and remove or rename the template file called frontpage (or whatever they’ve named it) and then the regular solution works. Good luck Rob.

After creating your page, look under the Dashboard menu, select Reading and the first option you see is Front Page Displays. Choose the radio button called Static Page and there will be a drop-down menu showing all of the pages you’ve created. Select the one you made called Home. The default one should no longer appear. If this doesn’t work, please indicate which theme you are using and we’ll go from there. Good luck!
