Thanks to Mike Lopez and his plug in called, “GYS Themed Categories,” we can now do what you suggested…and what I think WordPress might want to make a part of its basic package. Mike’s plugin works great for me.

And who wouldn’t? Your idea for a category-specific theme option seems like a basic feature missing in WordPress–at least it is not easy to do. If you get an answer, can you let us know?
