    Finally got this sorted out! Here’s how it went down for anyone still interested:

    I spoke to Green Geeks, my web hosts, who did a load of checks and determined that everything was working correctly their end. The only thing Green Geeks could not see was what was going on at my registrars end (The Company Warehouse) and recommended I switch the domain, which would be free anyway. I figured it would make sense for my web host to also be my registrar and it would be good to have everything in one place so I initiated the domain transfer.

    I received confirmation that the transfer had been initiated and then nothing. I tried it again with the same result so I called Green Geeks and they told me to check the emails associated with the domain. I called The Company Warehouse and asked them to tell what email addresses were associated with the domain and they told me it was my personal email and their admin email, which they’ve not received anything on and recommended I initiated the transfer again (they got a bit arsey with me). So I initiated the transfer again and still no luck.

    I called The Company Warehouse again (I might have got a bit arsey with them this time!) and they agreed to change all associated email addresses to my personal email address. I reinitiated the transfer and I finally got the authorisation email to switch the domain registrar.

    I then had to wait a week for everything to transfer over and finally when I logged into my admin page everything was there as it should be! I guess it was a problem with The Company Warehouse being the registrar.

    Anyway, problem sorted and I’d like to thank NeoTechnomad and datzone for their help and support throughout this troubled time!

    Through cPanel, you can access phpMyadmin, select your database and look at (your-db-prefix)_options and check to see if “siteurl” and “home” are the correct address and are the same.

    Yes, they both are http://totemsustainability.com

    Everything points to it. Here’s the CSS: http://totemsustainability.com/wp-content/themes/twentysixteen/style.css?ver=4.4.1

    This takes me to a 404 Not Found page…

    Try clearing your browser’s cache and cookies then trying the login: http://totemsustainability.com/wp-login.php

    No change…

    @datzone

    I guess the Green Geeks has signed a contract with the WordPress.COM (WPEngine/WP VIP). You can contact your hosting provider (Green Geeks) and ask them to fix the configuration problem. So far, (NeoTechnomad) I can access http://totemsustainability.com/wp-login.php

    I’ll contact Green Geeks and suggest this. When I go to totemsustainability.com/wp-login I get an error page telling me totemsustainability.wordpress.com doesn’t exist…

    Does it matter who the domains are registered with as long as the DNS it pointing in the right direction?

    @ NeoTechnomad

    So, you can login with either totemsustainability.com/wp-admin or totemsustainability.com/wp-login.php – correct?

    No, I can no longer log into my admin page from totemsustainability.com/wp-admin or totemsustainability.com/wp-login.php, the only address that will give me access now is totemsustainabilitydotcom.wordpress.com/wp-admin

    There is already a directory called “plugins” in my wp-content directory, along with themes and uploads.

    It’s hosted on Green Geeks but domains are registered with The Company Warehouse

    So, an update…

    As recommended by Green Geeks (my webhost) I have redirected my NS1 and NS2 to them and was about to transfer my domains to them too but I noticed a livechat window when looking at my domain information on WordPress so I started talking to a WordPress support person on live chat (which I can no longer access for some reason). I had a couple of domains mapped to WordPress which are hosted by Green Geeks and the WordPress support person (aka The Panda) recommended unmapping them and then suggested I clear my cache and retry my admin page to see if I got the plugin menu, before I transferred the domains to Green Geeks because they thought it may not be necessary. However, after clearing my cache I could no longer chat to The Panda and I had to refresh my admin page which is now telling me:

    “totemsustainability.wordpress.com doesn’t exist
    Do you want to register totemsustainability.wordpress.com?”

    If I go to totemsustainabilitydotcom.wordpress.com/wp-admin I can access my admin page, still no plugin option though (I usually access my admin page from totemsustainability.com/wp-admin).

    Feels very much like I’m taking one step forwards, two steps back!!!

    Any ideas?

    Thanks for your help so far both, I’ll converse with Green Geeks and let you know what happens.

    @datzone

    Tried adding “AddHandler application/x-httpd-php5 .php .php5 .php4 .php3” but no change.

    Green Geeks are saying my domain isn’t pointing to Green Geeks. Now trying to resolve what’s going on.

    I have created the file .htaccess as recommended by NeoTechnomad (got your post in email but doesn’t seem to have come through on here yet):

    Open a text editor, such as Notepad on Windows or Text Wrangler on Apple and paste this code in it with no spaces above or underneath…
    # BEGIN WordPress
    <IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
    RewriteEngine On
    RewriteBase /
    RewriteRule ^index\.php$ – [L]
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
    RewriteRule . /index.php [L]
    </IfModule>
    # END WordPress
    …then “save as” “.htaccess” – no .txt behind it and don’t forget the “.” infront of htaccess.

    Still no Plugin option

    (@dodi659)

    Yes I do, that’s the list of content came from

    (@dodi659)

    As far as I can tell there is nothing in my public_html folder called .htaccess. The following are in the root folder:

    cgi.bin
    i****d (user)
    wp-admin
    wp-content
    wp-includes
    … and then about 20 .php files

    Thread Starter dodi659

    (@dodi659)

    Tried replacing the recommended files with no effect.

    Did you check the .htaccess file in the root directory.

    I can’t find a .htaccess file to change, where would/ should it be?

    (@dodi659)

    Tried replacing the wp-admin and wp-includes folders again but still no plugin option.

    Yes I have the “All Users” link and it says administrator under “role” next to my name.

    I can also access the all the submenus you mention under the Setting menu.

    Thanks so much for your help so far by the way…

    (@dodi659)

    I’ll give that a go and see what happens.

    Someone else has suggested that I am not logging in as an admin user, but I am the only user and I’m using all the details I used for the installation. Would that make sense and is there any way I can check my user level? I’ve had a look at the list of users in myPHP admin page and I am indeed the only user listed.

    Deleted but still no plugin menu option

    No, it lets you transfer files between your computer and your hosting server (I use Filezilla).

    If you have one set up already you can follow the instructions here to update manually.

    If not you’ll need to download an FTP, get it set up (you’re host should be able to help with this), make a back up of your website and database and then do the manual update… and then fingers crossed!
