Thanks for your reply. It turns out that there is one plugin causing the problem: the Woocommerce Integration plugin by Learndash.
Do you perhaps have any knowledge of recent trouble with this plugin? Of course I will also contact the Learndash folks.
By the way: the Account Information fields were added by ourselves using custom code.
