Never-mind, I figured it out. For anyone else that runs into this, in qTranslate-X you must go to qTranslate-X Settings, Integration Settings, and check Compatibility Functions.
Current version of the plugin requires PHP 5.4 or higher (it was tested against 5.4.25). That particular line of code uses syntax that was introduced in PHP 5.4.
PHP 5.3 and lower are all unsupported by PHP.net, so if your applications permit upgrading, I would suggest doing so. FYI, PHP 5.4 ends support in September 2015, so you may want to consider moving to 5.5 or 5.6.
