Yes I had started to suspicion that this was done outside of wordpress. I was trying to find a way to do this within the confines of word press.
I have figured out that I can create a page with a bunch of subpages (one for each topic). You can see what I have started here:http://www.erinseden.com/what-grows-in-my-garden/
I just don’t know if there is a better way to achieve the same results? This seems that it may become cumbersome in the long run with 100’s of sub pages.
Any ideas or thoughts?

It seems that I need to create sub pages and then create a site map of all the sub pages?
Any feedback of if I am on the right track would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for the suggestion. I have been playing around with the recommended plugin. Can you create hidden pages/sub pages that would only be accessed through the site map?
Its not completely intuitive to me how I would use a site map to do exactly what I want but this may be due to my lack of experience with word press.
Basically I want to do the same thing as this:
