I used the mysqli package in order to use prepared SQL statements and avoid lots of wacky manual HTML escaping, which was hosing my specific conversion.
Wondering the same thing myself … would love to use it to manage the music library of a community choir, but I’m concerned that it doesn’t work with WP 3.0.x …
I just wrote my own importer since I was unhappy with the UTF8 conversion of the other ones available.
