In reply to: Bad Behavior 1.0-rc1What about Google bots? Does Bad Behavior allow web crawlers from search engines to access the site?
Of course. Googlebot, Yahoo! Slurp, msnbot, and pretty much any other search engine bot are completely unaffected.
During testing we found that a few less-well-known search engine bots were matching profiles because they were trying to look similar to some other user-agent (MSIE, or in one case, Konqueror). The code recognizes them and allows these search engine bots to pass through unaffected.

In reply to: Announce: Self-contained WordPress SpamAssassin PluginThe SpamAssassin Plugin version 0.6 has been released today. When used with a recent nightly, it can send suspicious comments to moderation unaltered. Previous versions placed a tag in suspicious comments to cause them to be moderated. (It still does this with 1.2.)

In reply to: Announce: Self-contained WordPress SpamAssassin PluginDon’t be too quick to rely on a single solution. I had a spam posted last night that made it past SpamAssassin and the one other blocking method I use. Had it not been for a nice list of spam words, it would have been posted to my blog, instead of gone into moderation. Upon checking it out, it appears it was posted by software I haven’t seen before. Ah, back to the war on spammers…

In reply to: Announce: Self-contained WordPress SpamAssassin PluginI’ve released version 0.5 today which works around the above server misconfiguration, and also fixes a problem with false positives on WP 1.2. It also provides improved trackback/pingback screening on 1.5. Thanks to h4xx0r for the feedback!

In reply to: Announce: Self-contained WordPress SpamAssassin PluginFinally someone reported an actual problem! If you’re receiving errors about “Headers already sent when posting a comment using this plugin, please do two things: (1) get the latest checkin from dev.wp-plugins.org, and (2) yell at your web host for their server misconfiguration.

In reply to: Announce: Self-contained WordPress SpamAssassin PluginThe WordPress SpamAssassin plugin 0.4 has been released. Go get it while it’s hot! New in this release: It now logs its activity so you actually can tell it’s doing something. Lack of feedback/logging was the only real complaint I’ve had with it so far…

In reply to: Referrer spammer caughtI just had a thought. Maybe people reading these blogs are actually clicking through to the spamvertised sites! Spam still exists because there are just enough stupid people on the Internet to make it worthwhile for them to inconvenience the vast majority of us. Suppose these stupid people are reading blogs, and decide they want to play some video poker or buy some Levitra from a Canadian pharmacy. Maybe this is what the spammers are thinking.
Of course, it doesn’t work very well. Bloggers are some of the least likely people to click on a legitimate ad, let alone a comment spam. But it must be getting the spammers something or they wouldn’t bother.
Oh, and shameless plug for my plugin.

If you’re using this plugin please post here and let me know. Seeing no feedback at all is kind of scary. 🙂

In reply to: 1.3 to 1.5 pages problemIf it is showing you the rewrite rules, then it was not able to update your .htaccess file. You need to manually paste them into your .htaccess file, and then if you want WP to do this automatically, make the .htaccess file writable.

In reply to: Why can’t you…(about spammers/flooders)The comment spammers are already scraping the form to learn what your wp-post-comment.php file is named and what your form fields are named.
