@threadi I wondered what happened to the first post, as I saw in the side bar it had been marked as as spam and then disappeared from the site. So I posted this one without the plugin and host names, as perhaps it was taken as a promotion, and thought maybe this was why. Thanks again

    @threadi thanks.
I have a site builder perhaps best I don’t name, as the earlier post was taken down as spam. There’s not many other active plugins, or ones that appear to optimise images. Its gallery builder is set to lazy load, and adjusts sizes according to the display chosen, I have thumbnails. The images are linked to open in a lightbox.

I did install an image compression plugin, but deactivated the same day as it was not needed. Have just removed it.

Site health has some recommendations but none appear to be related to this, though for all I know they may be. Mainly things with disabled caching, too many post revisions, files not being concatenated and critical CSS not prioritised. I guess I should look at these later too.

Actually I’ve just stumbled on image optimisation settings in the web hosting page on WP dashboard > Manage WordPress tab. These are the options and everything is set to ‘on’, except for ‘auto delete original image’ which I didn’t turn on after all it seems. So perhaps this option did appear at some stage, and glad to know I’m not going nuts! Here they are if at all helpful for anyone, as it appears to be my web host and not WordPress that does the optimisation.

    Image Optimization
We automatically optimize your uploaded images to WebP format for faster performance and reduced file sizes. You can also choose to delete the original images to save storage space.

    Enable Image Optimization
Enable or disable image optimization globally.

    Automatically Optimize Uploaded Images
When enabled, all your new image uploads will be automatically optimized to WebP format, ensuring faster page loading and reduced file sizes.

    Enable Bulk Optimization of Images
When enabled, allows bulk optimization of images in the media library.

    Prefer Optimized Image When Exists
When enabled, optimized images will be served in place of original images when they exist, improving performance.

    Auto Delete Original Image
When enabled, the original uploaded image is deleted and replaced with the optimized version, helping to save storage space. If disabled, the optimized image is saved as a separate file, retaining the original.

    Enable Lazy Loading
Lazy loading defers the loading of images until they are visible on the screen, improving page load speed and performance.

    Optimize Images via Cloudflare
Enables Cloudflare’s image compression to reduce load times and bandwidth usage.

Improve Image Loading on Slow Connections
Cloudflare Mirage accelerates image loading for mobile and slow networks.
