I’m having the same issue with the plugin. Looks like it broke back in December with the wordpress 4.0 update.
I am noticing the same issue. Still doesn’t work if I manually add the [embed] tags in the code view.

I copied the “retrieves and print the category banner” code and pasted it on my ‘myTheme/woocommerce.php’ page.
I do have a second question:
Is it possible for subcategories and/or products to inherit the parent category banner?
I’ve created a test site with a free woocommerce template off of their website, and can’t seem to figure out how to get it working on a product page.
