Here’s the solution:
#main has a width of 605px – the box.gif has a standard width of 1210px.
–> my new width of #main is 649px. In short: The box.gif must have a width of 1298px (not proportional).

When I use the #content selector the border is in the content area.
In #container the border is outside of the content.
