Update:
I reached the stage where I was ready to tear the entire site down and start again. I backed it up and then decided to test a downgrade to 4.1.1, however, after renaming the plugin folder to plugin.HOLD. The downgrade didn’t fix the edit problem (although it did update something on the database), so I decided to re-update to 4.2.1 again, not really sure where I was going with it. Then I managed to trigger some kind of contention when renaming the plugin folder back to reactivate it, and tripped a security rule, blocking my own IP. While lifting the IP block, I disabled MOD security on the server (again) and for some reason decided to give editing a page another crack. It worked!
I then re-enabled security, assuming I’d trigger a rule again and I’d have to track it down with the host. But no: editing continues to work with MOD security activated again.
Do not ask me exactly what was wrong or how it was fixed. I can just describe the fairly random things that happened before it started working again. Not sure if something in the database was put right by the downgrade or what. No idea. As well as keeping regular backups, I’ll be definitely be disabling automatic updates.
Thanks, but I don’t quite follow.
Now it’s just this minute updated itself to 4.2.1 and the problem is still there!!!
Do you have a static home page? It’s interesting that that’s the only one which successfully edits.
I wish I’d had the chance to make a current back-up before WP went ahead and updated itself. Unfortunately I didn’t have the opportunity. It’s looking like a downgrade or a complete reinstall now…
