some additional info:
the fail rate when i upload an image via api is about 50%
when the image upload works it takes like 7-8s
when i get an error it takes like 3.7-3.9s

so i checked the max_execution_time value in wordpress. and the value is set to 300 (screenshot: https://s.startup-insider.com/i/87d9f2908e.png)
i removed the WP Offload Media plugin on a develop environment and i can push media to the wordpress without getting the error.
