I have the css added using the Jetpack Custom CSS plugin. I’m not seeing any changes to the date style however.

I guess what I’m not getting is how to designate the years as a particular heading style.

When you say settings, are you referring to the plugin settings? If so, I’m not seeing where to define what text style to apply to the year headings.
If you mean by applying formatting to the shortcode, I was able to apply heading formats to the shortcode, but this changed both the year headings and links to each post under the year headings.
I think I’m missing something.
