I updated my webserver and rebooted it. After that it worked. Thank you all for your input!

Interesting. I wonder why it does not work for me.
Is there a way to enable debug for the plugin? What is the easiest way to debug this?
I am using the above combination with GeneratePress theme without any problems for years.
Well.. that is until today when I updated to WordPress 4.9..
