I was wrong on this, I just figured it out.
For anyone else with this issue:-
Downloaded version 2.1.7 from here:-

Followed instructions on winding back from here:-
http://www.nextgen-gallery.com/how-to-rollback-a-version/
This fixed sort by ID issue but not watermarks, however, once I uploaded the gallery images again and re-applied watermarks it worked.
So I’ll stay with 2.1.7 for now thanks.
Additional – looking at change logs it was most likely version before update was V2.1.7
