thanks so much for your reply, but there was a misunderstanding: I was talking about screen position rather than time position within the video : )
As you can see in the example I linked in my first post the video overlay is put exactly where the custom preview image was placed, and not in the center of the screen. This gives two great advantages: I can use whatever preview picture I want (instead of YouTube’s three choices), and it delays the loading of the YouTube video frame to the point when someone actually clicks on it to watch it.
It would be great if I learned how to do that.

Oh, only now I see that I use the term “iframe” without thinking about it. Of course it’s not an iframe. Or at least maybe it’s not an iframe ; )
