I managed to track it down. It was some CSS left over from another theme’s (bad) framework.
For anyone else out there: the ‘Simple Shortcodes’ plugin for the ‘SMPL Framework’ by ‘simplethemes’ will cause wonky behavior in other themes. It must be deactivated.
