Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who helped with this. Problem is now solved.
I discovered that my host allows me to use one of three different version of PHP. I changed it to PHP5.1 and the upgrade went just fine.

Yeah PHP 5.0.5 is the version my host uses. If I backup the DB using another plugin how do I get WAUP to skip that step and complete the upgrade anyway?
