OKay thank you for the tips. The ftp wouldn’t work because it required my username and stuff, but since then I’ve decided to try something different.
I just went to my web host and installed wp again, overwriting what existed before. At least on this go I should be able to put it together quicker, since I know what I want it to look like.
I will learn about child themes now, I had no ideas what they were.
