Just found the solution myself. Just in case anyone else is interested:
Settings for the cace enabler plugin are generally determined in a separate section of the htaccess file. After I managed to restore these settings as described here (scroll down to “advanced settings”), the loop disappeared and I was able to regain access to my site.
