In addition to what Liam suggested, you also need to make a setting change within the theme as follows:
Appearance => Customize => Theme Options => General Theme Options => Show Front Page (uncheck)Take care.

Like some others, when I click on “either the visual editor icon or expand screen icon in the upper right corner, nothing happens other than the url changing.” I also have Master Slider. Deactivated it, but still did not work. I have not had a chance to try deactivating the other plugins yet since there are many.
I did follow the instructions to find out about Javascript errors from the link you posted:
