okay here’s the fix.
1. backup the .htaccess as you said
2. remove the plugin
3. update permalinks to generate new .htaccess
4. install the plugin
5. click NO when asked to use previous settings
6. manually go through and update all settings to have max security
7. check htaccess has updated
8. export settings and import to other sitesnot sure of the cause, but the above seemed to fix everything.

There’s a 2nd WordPress instance running in its own folder, it also has the same issue. The htaccess doesn’t update
No change unfortunately. The htaccess is recreated okay but importing or adding the settings via the WP dashboard doesn’t update the new file.
Thanks for the reply Sybre. We checked the I and the blue bars etc, but we didn’t think to check the always elusive “/wp-admin/options-reading.php -> Site Visibility” option. All fixed now. Thank you.
I’m having a similar problem with a number of failed login attempt messages being generated and have completed the steps mentioned previously in this thread but they still keep coming.
We renamed the login page several times and now, whenever the plugin is active the URL we made it does not work…meaning we need to disable the entire plugin to be able to login to the dashboard. Painful.
The http://sitename.com/cms/xmlrpc.php prompts a 404 regardless of if the plugin is active, disabled or deleted.
The database tables have been cleared. There wasn’t a large number like other posts.
I’ve looked for a way to be able to manually change the login page via the plugin so when it’s active we can see what’s being set but there doesn’t seem to be any information available for that.
When we enter the correct login URL with the plugin active, the only minor difference we can see is the page title being set to
November 30, -0001 ArchivesCan you please review this after the holidays?
