Whenever the .htaccess file was removed, the site would come up and work perfectly. (Contains only 6 pages.) Resetting the permalinks to the default and then deleting the .htaccess file worked, in other words, but when I try to put it back in (the .htaccess file) everything stops again. In attempt to resolve this, I went thru and deleted ALL of the pages as created, again reset the permalinks to default, made sure trash was empty, then set permalinks to style I wanted, and recreated the pages. Everything fine so far. I try to put that .htaccess file back in and – again – Server 500 errors and nothing comes up. Only way I can seem to keep the site working is to NOT have that .htaccess file in there but then no protections are coming from it.
so, again, my question is just how important is that .htaccess file? What should be in there and where? Where can I find this out? Help would be greatly appreciated!
