thanks for the feedback, i’ll try to give snap-to-grid a go as it shouldn’t be too hard with the jquery ui plugin.
as for being open source, well i was thinking of this as like an on-demand website editing widget solution but i do also see the many advantages of open source. i’ll try to gauge what the users think and perhaps release an open source version when the demand is met.

also as to scribu’s plugin, i’d like to clarify that my solution and his does two different things.
his plugin is for editing the site’s contents, while my solution is for making design changes to the site. so in a way, scribu’s and my plugin would actually work very nice together.
