I apologize for not replying sooner. I was unable to provide a “real” file to you at this time. And I realized that I wanted to try some more troubleshooting steps on my end before wasting more of your time. Then some new priorities were thrown at me, so I have to put this project on the back burner for a few weeks. 🙁

I did learn something new though–the problem is that the actual update process is dying after a few records, but the browser page does not display that. The browser page displays the spinning icon, which implies that everything is continuing, when it really is not.

This is on a CSV product IMPORT, where I’m choosing “UPDATE” mode only. I am not adding new products. I’m only updating the Images column. My CSV file just contains the product ID and the Images column, with each record having URLs to multiple images. These images are already imported into the media library.

Importing other data (product name, price, description, etc.) is fast and reliable. The problem only happens updating Images. Searching online for solutions, I find many other people with the same complaint. It seems this has been a problem for a long time, so I’m not the only person.

Still, I want to try some better troubleshooting on my end, just to be a good customer before I involve you too deeply!

    Thank you for your time,
    Jake

Thank you, Igor. But Margaret’s route is doesn’t correctly pertain to my situation. I’m strictly updating existing product records. Therefore I am checking the box to do UPDATES. My import file has only 2 columns, the product ID and the Images column. I’m updating the Images field with a collection of 3-5 images per product.

Breaking the file up into smaller chunks is working, but this is strange. I only had 140 products to update total. As I experiment with different sizes of files (meaning a different amount of rows in my CSV file), I’m finding sometimes I can import 30 rows of updates, and other times just 5 rows.

I’m able to confirm this by running a query in the database that shows me the most recent product posts and their associated post_meta data where the meta_key is “_product_image_gallery”. I’m finding that when refreshing that query stops showing me new rows, the Import has died–often partway through my file. This helps me decide where to begin the next batch in my next csv file, but I believe this is a very small number of records to be importing, especially if it’s just adding/updating _product_image_gallery values in the post_meta table.

    Thanks,
    Jake

Thanks Margaret! I read that documentation you provided before I posted, but I couldn’t find any info on dealing with this particular situation.

My import is an “update-only” import. Not adding new rows. Only updating the links to image files. I will try again, breaking up my CSV into smaller ones.

I wasn’t complaining about the slow import. My primary concern was, I wanted to avoid making something “bad” happen by refreshing the browser since I don’t know where the process stood. It sounds like I can safely leave the page and observe the website and the database to decide how to proceed.

    Thank you.

Nevermind. Delete! Unpost! I made a mistake!

Well since I can’t delete, I’ll share my stupidity in case it helps the next person. I was working in the wrong version of my CSV file. The one with blank categories. I resaved my Excel spreadsheet to a fresh, complete CSV and ran the import again. Success! <SMH>
