I found the solution, in customize.

PROBLEM SOLVED. It was my web host didn’t clear the cache. I spent hours trying to figure this out and finally phoned tech support; they checked out if it was a cache problem, cleared the cache, and everything reset the way it is supposed to be beautifully. Okay, thanks and goodnight.

I saw an old post on this; somebody was having the exact same problem. The recommendation was “Well, yes you can easily override demo contents simply from Customize section.i.e. from Appearance-> Customize. Almost all default sections of the homepage can be customize from here. Let’s say the demo content that you have mentioned above is controlled from
Home/Front Service Section panel of Customizer. Respective blocks of content can then be shown by choosing pages on this panel.”

However, I did that. I have set my Home Page to “Welcome to My Family Tree” but it’s still giving me all the demo stuff, and I still get that “Administrative Manager”.

Clearly something is not working and I really don’t want to have to go into the css and do coding. Frankly, I don’t even know what “Service 1” “Service 2” and “Service 3” refers to.

    HELP.

Okay, I got no responses so I just deactivated the Redirection plugin and installed Simple 301 Redirects. It’s not yet rated for 3.8.1 WordPress but hopefully it will be soon!!

I have some security plugins installed; could they be the source of the problem? If so, then what?

Well that was certainly strange. After a hiatus working with my blog, I went back to it this morning and – everything was working properly, the right side-bar was there, and the “html” tab showed my html code.

Another mystery solved – mysteriously – with no explanation.

    The problem persists.

I guess nobody has any answers on this.

Maybe I just need to wait for the next version of WordPress to come out – whenever that is going to be – and upgrade everything.

    Actually, still a problem.

Both tabs (“visual” and “html”) are showing the “visual”!

And I still can’t get the right sidebar to show what’s supposed to be there.

I’ve done everything you suggested, except for resetting the plugins folder (don’t know how to do that) but I have deactivated all the plugins, and the situation persists.

    Thank you.

    Esmi,

The memory is increased up to some wildly large number and I’m using PHP5 (Single php.ini). This long column with a blank right sidebar only happened when I deactivated the plugins and got my “visual” back (which is what I was trying to do at that time).

I subsequently started activating plugins and still have the “visual” tab working properly again (but have just deactivated them for this “test” but that hasn’t affected the blank right sidebar).

    Esmi,

It’s correct (3 columns) on the “pages” but not on the “posts”.

All the things from the right sidebar are in one long column for posts only.

    Any ideas?

    Okay, Esmi.

I deactivated the plugins and started reactivating them a few at a time. Then my “visual” reappeared so it’s one of those plugins; I’ll narrow it down shortly. Very interesting.

Now what’s happened is thaton my Dashboard when I’m working on a page or post, everything is I have three columns – to the left I have my dashboard info (posts, appearance, settings etc.), in the middle I have my working space for my post or page, and the right sidebar HAD the categories, the “published” info, etc. but is now BLANK All that used to be there(e.g. “publish”, “post tags”, etc. in the right sidebar is now down beneath.

Under “screen options” I have chosen “two columns” but everything is beneath, not next to.

    Any suggestions here?

    Thanks.

    Esmi,

Sorry for my late response. I’m going to try your suggestions. Will let you know how they go.

    thank you.

    Esmi,

The problem has been solved. It was not a WP problem. Somehow the server’s php.ini file spontaneously (!) changed to read the system file instead of reading my file, and it didn’t allow enough memory to my files. When the Tech Support person changed it to “”keep PHP5 (single php.ini)”, everything came through, my custom permalinks started working, and my .htaccess started working too.

Geeze…. Guess I can get some sleep tonight!

    Thanks, all.

I hadn’t modified the .htaccess file in about a month and it was working well until this week. so I don’t see that there’s going to be anything to modify if it was all working correctly until just this week.

Besides, that doesn’t explain why the CUSTOM permalinks are not working. That’s something I need to get fixed!!!!

Right, but now it’s set to default. If I set it to custom, which is how most of my pages were designed, nothing works and it’s all 404 errors. For example, my feed won’t work. Here’s an example of my standard URL that is in my RSS feed:

    http://www.dogsdontlookbothways.com/joeys_blog/4400-jackson-homestead-stop-along-the-underground-railroad/

and you just get the page not found.

If you look in the right sidebar under RSS feed, it says “RSS Error…..”

Also, if you try the http://www.dogsdontlookbothways.com/joeysw_blog (notice the misspelling) it will give you the 404 error. But there is a redirect on that and the redirect isn’t working either.

I can’t leave it at the default state. And the redirect isn’t working.
