After posting yesterday I discovered I was having a similar problem with the regular WP gallery. I tried a long shot, which was to switch my router off and on again…. and it solved the problem 🙂
I’m also having this problem – error code 7. I also get the error code when I try disabling the flash uploader, and it also doesn’t work if I try to upload the images directly to the folder on the server. So can’t use it at the moment. 🙁

I haven’t added any coding myself but it occurred to me that it could be the theme I’m using (I’ve had this problem with every theme I’ve used to date, which is why I hadn’t considered it before). So I just switched to theme Twenty Eleven and, lo and behold, I’ve got the number of columns I asked for!

I’m not using a plugin. I’m using the standard WP add image/gallery function (which generates the shortcode: [gallery link="file" order="DESC" columns="4" orderby="title"]) but gives me 5 columns!
